Cay Taylan has been around. DJing in the 90s, he managed to retain enough brain cells despite all those late nights to start producing around the start of the millennium and kept himself busy, bustling around the nu-jazz scene in its heyday. Good times, as I can testify.
Roll on to 2024 and the passion and eclectic spirit are still there, though if "Life" is anything to go by he could be finally mellowing with age. It's a sprawling, cavernous, refreshingly full bodied ambient excursion that floods through the speakers, anchored by its low frequency weight which gives it a corporeal effect that is anything but ignorable.
But what sets "Life" apart is the subtle mantric loopiness. Immersed in its depths are pleasantly repetitive percussive clicks, repurposed and urgent string loops, insistent but never invasive pads and those twinkling tones that shine their light throughout. Whilst being as far from pop as you can get, it's as hooky as hell. Prepare to be swept along in its hypnotic shadows.
