Cici Arthur is a wonderful new collaborative project between long time TSMM fave Joseph Shabason, and the soon to be favoured Chris A. Cummings and Thom Gill if this track is anything to go by.
The project apparently is a vehicle to showcase Cummings' vocals and writing, and his mates have gone all out to do just that. Eschewing one man and his machine modern day production they've taken a trip back to the twentieth century and a golden age of orchestral crooning, huge studios, stands filled with sheet music and earnest looking composers in suits with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths. Well almost.
Shabason has pretty much perverted most genres he's flirted with, gently twisting tropes and making the familiar somehow unfamiliar, and this is no exception, although you have to scratch under the surface of the vocal star of the show, unhurried stand-up bass and twinkling keys to the distant slightly deviant percussion programming with a hint of exotica to it, the mischievous yet masterly sound design and ambient augmentation.
Oh yeah, if that wasn't enough there is a stunning video too, with Nicholas Krgovich stitching together suitably vintage footage in to the perfect visual accompaniment. The song & visuals are a touch of class from start to finish and also that rare thing, a tune that you and your parents might just agree on.
