Sometimes an evolutionary release comes along from an artist, whether by luck, cosmic design or personal decision that takes them to the next level and potentially acts as a springboard. Is "Unholy Prayer" that moment for Coraline James? I guess we'll find out with the next release or two.
It's certainly a stunning tune. Gone is the serviceable, bar pleasing singer songwriting of yore to be replaced by a far deeper, Celtic rooted strain of folk with altogether darker subject matter - spousal abuse, child loss and extra-marital solace in this case. Don't be deterred if you were looking for something a bit lighter, the weightier lyrics have brought out hitherto hidden depths in her vocal delivery which means you'll be more impressed than depressed.
To help this dark tale through the speakers she's also enlisted a new instrumental palette. In comes the hand played percussion, variously mournful and moving strings all swept up in a dramatic arrangement that adds extra potency to her already powerful vocals. It's a compelling combination - more please.
