Flyte - Emily and Me (Nettwerk)

Flyte are a pair of school friends and songwriters - Will Taylor and Nick Hill. Both English teachers they have a nice line in thoughtful, pop leaning folk rock, although after initially flirting with various genres, early 2025 indications are that under the watchful eye of Ethan Johns they might be mellowing with age on their forthcoming new LP, and I for one am not complaining.

After the brutally honest first single, "Emily and Me" is the latest album tease and it's one of my favourite folk tunes of the year so far. A simple but seductive acoustic guitar refrain sets a gentle course, propelled by suitably soft edged percussion and a velvety bass line. There is a fitting West Coast warmth to this love letter to Los Angeles, and/or one of the city's residents, as the couple soak up the sights and commune with the spirits that still haunt the city. It's an intimate and charming tune that makes you give thanks for the repeat button. Bring on the album.
