juunni - u i (Self Release)

juunni - u i cover art

I do like a killer debut single and juunni have just hit the ground running.

Initially bonding over a shared love of art, they decided to go all in and have been travelling around the States, honing their A/V concepts in underground spots, and amongst other things living in a bus and working on farms to focus, survive and artistically thrive. In these days of self entitlement and desire for instant gratification, their long game desire to nail their artistic vision before launching themselves at the public consciousness is admirable, not to mention paying off - I was immediately struck with their singularity and audio visual originality.

Kicking off with some acoustic guitar, it takes all of about 5 seconds for an angry electronic stab to shatter the folk calm and signal their leftfield intent, and so it begins.

Vocals are turned into autotuned angels or nitrous oxidised aliens, the guitar picking alternates with further machine made lightning bolts to shock the unwary and jolt even the attentive. If that wasn't enough occasional drums punch their way through the speakers to join the fray.

"u i " is a real sweet and sour feast, but if it sounds like a lot don't worry, the girls also have a rare spatial awareness; they know when to give and when to take away, an ability that usually comes with studio time and releases, and is rarely present on a debut single.

Give them a like and a follow so you don't miss a beat from them in 2025, it's promising to be quite the ride.
