Lia Pikus leapt on to my radar last weekend via Submithub, with a track from her debut LP, that was released at the start of the year. I was immediately smitten by the field recording addition, close mic placement and beatific vibes of "My Body Becomes The Sea" and am subsequently enjoying by the longer release, it really is an assured debut.
It sounds like Pikus has been playing the cello for a long time, hard to believe given her youthful appearance, perhaps she started young? Who knows? Her online musical presence seems only to extend to, "experimental cellist based out of Brooklyn", but when the music speaks for itself I can live with that, some releases just don't need to be differentiated by concepts, tales or autobiographical detail.
Not only is she an accomplished cellist, it also appears that she's not adverse to some live looping, adeptly layering her plucked and bowed sounds into cultured, one woman orchestral arrangements that glide elegantly through the speakers. If that wasn't enough she's also got rather the angelic voice, that whilst not quite as distinctive as her musicianship, most certainly is not lacking in quality or clarity, its softly delivered, at times quivering tones gliding over, under and through the string powered thermals.
Add some light touch electronics and presumably - due to the lack of credits, self played guitar and her sound gamely ambles between softer edged neoclassical, classic singer songwriter, string powered ambient pop & ethereal folk troubadour. Give her a listen and a follow, she's one to keep an eye on for sure.
