Narion is a shadowy UK producer with just a few abstract images on an Instagram account and the mission statement, "post-rave electronic somewhere between dub soaked ambient, breakbeats and cinematic sound worlds" to his name, quite refreshing in this age of social media pouting and preening.
He's also just released his debut EP, and I'm happy to report he's off to a good start. My focus here is the opening track and its restless, dystopian (or at least urban jungle) ambient ways. Kicking off with a twisted bassline statement of intent that summon memories of twentieth century raves, it soon morphs into haunting, drifting synth pads which give the old school spoken words samples a soap box to stand on. It's not long though before they're joined by cascading, hypnotic Sheffield bleeps that lift you out of the smoke filled haze and off the sofar for a moment of clarity, before depositing you once more into a final ambient current that ushers you to the door.
It's a fine slice of broken streetlight and tower block ambient engineering and the perfect gateway for the crunchy downtempo breaks and start of night, shadowy IDM to follow. Tune in.
