Philly's Oreana has a nice line in well crafted post rock that she's been honing, with some well chosen collaborators, for the last five years. On this latest single she's enlisted versatile, ambient inclined electronic producer rhubiqs to give "Post Meridiem" - itself a collaboration with the somewhat mysterious E. Kusanagi, an ethereal reimagining.
The original was the mellowest middle part in a great three track single that is worth tracking down, and pretty much ditched all rock inclinations for a more laid back, dreamier, transcendent folk approach that almost crept into new age territory with its beatific vibes.
Rhubiqs immediately sets a firmer course with a robust drone, but fear not it's not long before some unhurriedly looped, well meaning piano adds some calming tones to the more forceful electronic undercurrents. The original ethereal vocals are then melted down into machine pads for extra ambiguity, rhubiq swirling them around his own well crafted ambient designs until they're a mere spectral presence - more felt than heard, as the original guitar lines suffer a similar fate, with just the faintest hint of the track's post rock origin.
It's a fine rework of a beautiful original.
