Quiet Cowboy are string playing whizz Ron Raymond, a dab hand at pedal/lap steel, guitar, dobro, mandolin, bass, guitar and vocals, alongside the equally adept guitar playing Michael Chacon. Quite who is adding the electronic elements I'm not sure and when it sounds this good I don't really care, they've got quite the ambient Americana sound going on, and I'm here for them
Their self-titled LP from 2023 was an expansive look at what Americana was, is and could be, leaning a bit more to familiar Americana forms and gentler folk rock shapes, but snuggled into the LP were some great atmospheric cuts, and a sign of things to come.
As you'd expect from this EP's title the four new cuts eschew the toe tapping bar tunes to explore the horizontal star gazing, universal consciousness pondering end of the Americana spectrum. The opening track in particular sets a star bound course, the traditional instruments melting into the electronica to become one and blurring the lines between man and machine. This is closely followed by the more grounded sounds of "The Road" with its more familiar strumming adding some earthly structure to the atmospheric lap steel. "Non Sense" charts a less rhythmic, more cosmic course, the guitar picking twinkling its light over the beautifully crafted pedal steel atmospherics, before the camp fire contemplation of, "Becoming a Memory" rounds off this welcome exploration of lower gravity Americana. More please.
