Sailcloth, is multi-instrumentalist producer Alex Luquet from Pennsylvania, who has been using his focus instrument - the upright bass, to create low frequency celebrating soundscapes that defy easy description, but variously explore low-lit post-classical, cinematic and electroacoustic ambient realms.

His latest single, "Old notes", eschews sonic makeup and puts the contrabass unadorned and unafraid in the centre of the studio. There was never any denying Luquet's ability with his main instrument but it's a welcome reminder of his musical roots and know-how, not to mention the instruments's ability to dig that bit deeper emotionally and it's introspection encouraging ways.
On "Old notes" Sailcloth gently coaxes the instrument to life by just skimming the surface of its strings, before increasing the pressure to start this contemplative tune that would sound equally at home in a concert hall or lonesome cowboy flick. Just imagine our world weary main character lost in thought during another long horseback trek, ever ready for the chance encounters, both good and bad, ahead. The slowly dissipating notes creating a gently restless ambient bed that mirrors the grandeur and earth frequencies of those vast plains, as the brooding, more agile bowing ponders the vagaries of human nature.
Let's hope this is the starting pistol for a well overdue longer release, but in the meantime take a listen to his debut LP from 2021 on the ever interesting Lost Tribe Sound.
