Waldo's Gift are a noisy trio from Bristol, who like so many British artists have grown up in the UK's musical melting pot of Caribbean culture, metal, jazz, hip hop, punk and electronic music. Unlike many of their contemporaries, who usually just focus on a couple of main genres to fuse, these boys are busy shovelling the world of music and a healthy dose of attitude into an old cement mixer to forge their own far out and freaky vision.
Their latest release is a 7" single, which signals an LP is on the way next year, and it's nasty. Although I'm mostly chilling these days, I've been around various musical blocks, and for whatever reason, perhaps Anthropocene angst or maybe a mid-life crisis, I've been appreciating the shoutier, angrier, disenchanted and saying something about it end of the musical spectrum a bit more again the last couple of years. These boys are definitely scratching that itch with their new single.
"Malcolm's Law" opens with what sounds like a distant shop alarm and is soon joined by a sub-woofer worrying bassline that won't be kind to cheaper audio equipment, followed by a riddim from the fiercer end of the broken scene to get the party started. After that it's agitated jazz rock does battle with metal guitar mutations as the drums morph into rockier territory when they see fit. It's danceable sonic madness, and all you need to do is choose whether to show off your footwork or bang your head like you were at a 70's AC/DC show.
Flip for more metal infused madness that you'll have to describe, yourself I'm struggling to describe these boys, which could just be why I like them so much.
